Medfield Lions launch Coins for Change campaign

Editor’s Note: The following was submitted by the Medfield Lions Club.
As many residents may recall, the Medfield Lions Club held an annual “Toll Road” Collection in the springtime. Lions Club members would be positioned around the center of town and at busy Saturday morning spots like Blue Moon Café and Starbucks asking for donations to support the Mass. Lions Eye Research Fund.
Unfortunately, due to the coronavirus, the Medfield Lions were not able to hold a MLERF collection in 2020; this year, in lieu of a “Toll Road” collection, there will be an opportunity for everyone to donate coins, bills or even VENMO a donation to the “Coins for Change” MLERF Collection. ....

Rabbi moves Holocaust survivors front of vaccine line – The Forward

The COVID-19 vaccination clinic for Holocaust survivors in a local synagogue started out a bit ominously: A police cruiser was stationed outside and a bomb-sniffing German Shepherd was deployed inside, zealously looking for explosives.
“Unfortunately, it’s because we’re Jewish,” said Rabbi Danielle Eskow, who organized the clinic Thursday at Congregation Kehillath Israel, a conservative synagogue in Brookline. “We have to worry about these things.”
The idea for the clinic came from the rabbi’s physician sister, Marisa Tieger. They’d been chatting about how unfair it was that as healthy women in their 30s they had easy access to the vaccine by virtue of their professions, while people much older especially Holocaust survivors are struggling to get it. The state’s overwhelmed vaccination program has been riddled with problems, including an inadequate vaccine allotment, scant appointments, and a clunky appointment booking system prone to crashing. Anoth ....

International team identifies 127 glaucoma genes in largest study of its kind

 E-Mail
In the largest genome-wide association study of glaucoma comparing the genes of 34,179 people with the disease to 349,321 control subjects, an international consortium of researchers identified 44 new gene loci and confirmed 83 previously reported loci linked to glaucoma. Loci are considered genetic street addresses, denoting a specific location on a gene.
The study s authors hope the identification of these genes will lead to new treatment targets for this incurable eye disease that is a leading cause of blindness worldwide.
These new findings come out of the highest-powered genome-wide association study of glaucoma to date, and show the power of team science and using big data to answer questions when research groups around the world join forces, said co-senior study author Janey L. Wiggs, MD, PhD, Associate Chief of Ophthalmology Clinical Research at Mass Eye and Ear, and the Paul Austin Chandler Professor of Ophthalmology and Vice Chair of Clinical Re ....
