A new resident-led task force has been named to review and make recommendations about law enforcement in Bloomington and Monroe County. The Future of Policing Task Force is being established as part of the City’s commitment to the reduction of racial inequities and continuous improvement of outcomes for all residents, as outlined in Mayor John Hamilton’s 2020 Recover Forward initiative and the City’s Plan to Advance Racial Equity.

Maqubè Reese’s first name was created by her mother a combination of the names of her four aunts. “I feel like I embody all of them,” she says. “I absolutely love my name. I feel like I live it every day.”
As she gets ready to enter her 30s in 2021, that wellspring of family appears to fuel a very busy life. Reese works as the assistant director of diversity initiatives for the Indiana University Kelley School of Business and is engaged in an abundance of community work. She recently completed a term with the City of Bloomington’s Commission on the Status of Women and chaired the City’s Black History Month Committee. She currently serves on the City’s Board of Public Safety, is the vice president of the Monroe County Branch of the NAACP, and is involved with Count Us In Indiana, a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization dedicated to encouraging diverse voter turnout. ....

The City of Bloomington Commission on the Status of Black Males (CSBM) is accepting nominations for its annual Outstanding Black Leader of Tomorrow Awards. Presented each year at the Black History Month Gala Celebration in February, the awards encourage the development of future leaders and recognize local contributions by young Black Americans. Nominations must be made by Tuesday, February 9, at the CSBM webpage, where there is more information and descriptions of past recipients. (Presentation of this year’s awards will take place at a virtual gala, being held Saturday, February 27, with details to be announced here.) ....
