A new resident-led task force has been named to review and make recommendations about law enforcement in Bloomington and Monroe County. The Future of Policing Task Force is being established as part of the City’s commitment to the reduction of racial inequities and continuous improvement of outcomes for all residents, as outlined in Mayor John Hamilton’s 2020 Recover Forward initiative and the City’s Plan to Advance Racial Equity.

As the region rebuilds from the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2021 Wake Up! with United Way season will focus on the theme “Building a Better Normal.” Each month’s discussion will focus on topics like homelessness, food security, and workers’ rights.
“As we rebuild from the pandemic, we have an opportunity to rethink how, together, we address our challenges,” says Efrat Feferman, United Way of Monroe County executive director. “This series aims to dig a little deeper into the underlying issues contributing to poverty and economic insecurity, while also bringing to light innovative solutions and how we can best support rebuilding a better normal.”

Residents are invited to apply for a new resident-led task force to help increase racial equity throughout the city of Bloomington. The Racial Equity Task Force is being established based on recommendations of the City’s Plan to Advance Racial Equity, accessible at the City’s website here. This task force, dedicated to addressing broad issues of racism in the community and developing recommendations to address them, will comprise a broad selection of up to 15 residents. Bloomington residents interested in applying for a seat may complete this application by Monday, February 15, at midnight and will be notified of their selection by Tuesday, February 23.
