Christmas in July: Seniors to be treated to "Ole Time Brunch" | News

Sulphur seniors age 60 and over are in for a treat
On July 6 beginning at 9 a.m., itâs the Sixth Annual Christmas in July with a Twist. This yearâs theme is âSenior Ole Time Brunchâ.
The event will be held at West Cal Event Center located at 401 Arena Rd.
Brad Brinkley and Company Band will provide entertainment. Bingo prizes will be provided by the Calcasieu Parish Sheriffâs offices elderly services.
Volunteers include Life Christian Academy, Our Lady School Art Class, Sulphur High Football team and Honor Society and Sulphur Sunrise Rotary.
The event is sponsored by City of Sulphur, West Calcasieu Event Center, Hixson-Sulphur Memorial Funeral Home. RSVP to event hostess Jody Barrilleaux at (337) 794-3113 for food preparation. ....

Brockovich 'trying to change narrative', Sulphur mayor says plans — though delayed by weather — on track to improve water plant | News

Sulphur Mayor Mike Danahay said âoutside interest from environmental groups that have been brought into the situation are trying to change the narrativeâ when it comes to plans for improving the Verdine Water Plant.
Danahay, speaking to members of L.I.F.T. who were meeting at Hixon Funeral Home in Sulphur, was referring to the Brockovich Report and recent social posts by that group. The following is from a May 15 post: âSulphur Drinking Water is NOT SAFE . not even close. Itâs not just the iron and manganese making the water unpalatable. Sulphurâs water is very corrosive with a pH of 6. It is destroying the infrastructure, your plumbing, hot water heater, fixtures and appliances.â ....

Airport trying to land funds, Southland waiting on FEMA before repairs can be made

The West Calcasieu Airport Managing Board has been lining up its approach to land FEMA dollars since Hurricane Laura completely destroyed the terminal and caused other damage to Sulphurâs Southland Field.
âThe hoops we are going through are just unbelievable,â said Darla Perry, a CPA contracted by the board. âI worked with FEMA after Rita and after Ike. Many people fraudulently abused the FEMA programs in those years. So many safeguards have been added to prevent that, it makes for a long timeline on getting projects completed.â
Forty-one planes were stored at Southland Field. Some were moved to different locations before Hurricane Laura made landfall. Eleven were destroyed. ....

SULPHUR, La. (KPLC) - The City of Sulphur has awarded a bid for new filters at the Verdine Water Plant.
The filters are expected to decrease the iron in the water that is currently causing it to be discolored.
Sulphur accepted a bid of $1,920,000 from ETEC Services for new 8-foot Manganese Greensand pressure filters. ....
