In Mozambique, the conflict and climatic shocks in the northern province of Cabo Delgado continue to drive increasing displacement and are leading to a rapid deterioration of the humanitarian situation in the region.
Nearly 670,000 people were internally displaced in Cabo Delgado, Niassa and Nampula by the end of 2020. Almost 580,000 people were uprooted from their homes in 2020 alone, as violence in the province expanded geographically and increased in intensity. ....

A new start for over 600 people affected by Cyclone Eloise in Mozambique

Nhamatanda, 20 February 2021 Survivors of Cyclone Eloise have received materials from Mozambique Red Cross Society (CVM) to construct houses and start a new life.
“I would like to thank the Red Cross for giving me and my neighbours these materials. We were suffering at the camp; there wasn’t enough space. With this donation, we will be able to construct our house and live a normal life again,” said Amelia Lewanhe, one of the families that received shelter materials.
Over 300,000 people have been affected by Eloise that made landfall on 23 January. Thousands were forced from their homes and have been living in temporary accommodation shelters. More than 117,000 hectares of crops were destroyed by torrential downpours and floods. The most affected districts are Nhamatanda, Buzi, Beira and Dondo. ....

SITUATION OVERVIEW
The landfall of Tropical Cyclone Eloise in the night of 23 January 2021 and previously, the Tropical Storm Chalane on 30 December 2020, have deeply affected Sofala, in particular Buzi area, Manica, the southern part of Zambezia, Inhambane, and Gaza provinces. Out of these provinces,
Sofala was the most impacted, reporting significant damages and people affected.
According to the National Institute for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction (INGD), 441,686 people have been affected and over 56,000 houses were severely damaged or destroyed. In total, 43,327 people have been displaced, while 34,566 people were evacuated. Although the resettlement sites established in the aftermath of Cyclone Idai in 2019 were not flooded and proved to be safe locations, Cyclone Eloise affected the shelter and Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) structures in ....

Restoring normalcy to children's lives after Tropical Cyclone Eloise

Three days after the passage of Tropical Cyclone Eloise through Zambezia province, several children affected by the phenomenon in Quelimane, the province s capital, are already recovering their smile and resuming their everyday life.
After the storm,15-year-old Ophelia from the Incidua neighbourhood –one of the neighbourhoods most vulnerable to natural disasters in Quelimane–, is optimistic.  Going to school, supporting my parents, homework and also playing with my friends is still my priority despite the damage caused by the cyclone in my home and in our area , she says.
In our community, this rain was seen as a sign of the beginning of a bad year , Ophelia adds, pointing out the fact that her neighbourhood is located near the mangrove as one of the factors that make it more vulnerable to the sea s fury. ....
