Southern Africa – Tropical Cyclone Eloise Flash Update No.8, As of 25 January 2021 Format HIGHLIGHTS • The Eloise weather system is passing over Botswana, after bringing heavy rains to central Mozambique, south-eastern Zimbabwe and northern South Africa. • Mozambique bore the brunt of the storm, which hit the country as a Tropical Cyclone on 23 January, affecting nearly 176,500 people, displacing more than 8,300 people and leaving 6 dead, according to initial data from the Government. • Governments and humanitarian partners are working to assess the situation and respond to needs in areas hardest-hit by the storm. SITUATION OVERVIEW After crossing Mozambique, south-eastern Zimbabwe and the northern districts of South Africa, the tropical weather system generated by Eloise, which has now transitioned into a low pressure storm, is currently passing over southern Botswana. ACT Alliance Alert: Mozambique: Tropical Cyclone Eloise Format In the afternoon of Saturday the 23rd January 2021, the province of Sofala in Mozambique, was hit by a tropical storm ELOISE. Several parts of central Mozambique have been flooded after Cyclone Eloise struck near the port city of Beira with wind speeds of up to 160km/h. Water levels were already high, even before the tropical cyclone made landfall, causing several rivers in the region to burst their banks. More than 1,000 houses have been destroyed and another 3,000 badly damaged. It is reported that more than 160,000 people are already directly affected in Beira according to Mozambique’s National Institute for Disaster Management and Reduction. ....
Mozambique: Tropical Storm Eloise - Emergency Plan of Action (EPoA) Format Description of the disaster This DREF operation is being launched in response to Tropical Storm Eloise, which made landfall on early hours of 23 January 2021 near Beira City in Sofala Province, Central Mozambique. According to the National Institute of Meteorology of Mozambique (INAM), Eloise made landfall with sustained wind speed of up to 140km/h and gusts up to 160km/h and has brought heavy to intense rainfall to the coastal and inland areas. Other provinces being impacted are Inhambane and Gaza Provinces. There are growing concerns regarding the potential for widespread floods, with all river basins in Sofala and Inhambane provinces already above alert levels before Eloise making landfall and more rains to follow in the coming days. ....
