Mozambique: Cyclone Eloise leaves destruction behind


One dead, over 160,000 affected and thousands of houses damaged as tropical cyclone hits Sofala province

After hitting Mozambique s Sofala province on Saturday, Tropical Cyclone Eloise has left at least one person dead, thousands of houses destroyed, and tens of thousands of people directly affected, reports said.
“More than 1,000 houses have been destroyed and another 3,000 badly damaged. More than 160,000 people are already affected in Beira, according to Mozambique’s National Institute for Disaster Management and Reduction,” Act Alliance, a global alliance of more than 145 churches and related organizations, said in a report Monday.
“Preliminary reports also indicate that nearly 7,000 people have been displaced and more than 5,000 houses have been destroyed, damaged, or flooded in Buzi, Dondo and Nhamatanda,” Act Alliance cited preliminary data from Mozambique’s government, saying they fear these numbers ....

Tropical Cyclone Eloise made landfall on Saturday, 23 January in Mozambique, bringing heavy rainfall and flooding to areas affected by Tropical Storm Chalane three weeks ago and devastated by Cyclone Idai less than two years ago.
Preliminary official reports indicate that more than 176,000 people have been affected, including more than 8,300 displaced. At least six people have died and 12 have been injured.
The cyclone left more than 8,800 houses destroyed, damaged or flooded, mainly in Buzi, Dondo, Nhamatanda and Beira City. More than 160 classrooms and at least 26 health centres have been damaged, and electricity was affected in some areas. Almost 142,000 hectares of crops have been flooded and could affected the annual harvest expected for April. These numbers are very preliminary and could rise in the days ahead as the full extent of the damage becomes known. ....

Tropical Cyclone Eloise is forecast to make landfall near Beira City in Sofala Province, Mozambique, as a Tropical Cyclone in the early hours of 23 January.
Sofala Province has experienced heavy rainfall, strong winds and flooding since 15 January, with more than 21,500 people affected and more than 1,900 houses flooded prior to Eloise’s landfall, according to the Government. With many rivers and basins above alert levels, the most immediate concern is the potential for significant flooding as Eloise brings further rains.
Following its landfall in Mozambique, Eloise is expected to move inland, bringing heavy rains to southern Zimbabwe, northern South Africa and far eastern Botswana. ....
