Attorney-General and Minister for Economy Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum has directed the Board and CEO of the Tertiary Scholarship and Loans Board (TSLB) to urgently review the suspension of National Topper’s Scheme (NTS) students following its unilateral and arbitrary decision to raise GPA requirements.

The Attorney-General met today with the TSLB Board and CEO, the Dean of the FNU College of Medicine, and the Solicitor General’s office, along with a number of representatives of recently-suspended NTS students.

“The TSLB made a hasty decision – without government’s approval or consultation to raise the requirements for student’s academic performance under the National Topper’s Scheme. Before they had any real idea of what was happening, some students found themselves unfairly suspended. Rather than rush to change the GPA requirements an ....

The Tertiary Scholarship and Loans Board has confirmed that Fiji has now reached its full capacity for qualified and trained doctors.
Minister for Health Dr Ifereimi Waqainabete has also confirmed there will be no shortage of doctors in the near future after the suspension of scholarships offered by TSLB for the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery program.
TSLB Chairman, Rakesh Ram says apart from around 1,000 graduate doctors now in Fiji as at the end of 2020, over 100 new TSLB funded graduates will be joining the profession from 2021 to 2025 every year. ....

790 students currently studying for a Bachelor of Medicine and a Bachelor of Surgery will not be affected by the suspension of scholarships offered for this program by the Tertiary Scholarship and Loans Board.
This has been confirmed by CEO Bobby Maharaj who says only new applications for National Toppers Scholarships and Tertiary Education Loan Scheme for MBBS and oral health will be suspended from this year.
This means any student wishing to study MBBS will have to pay for their own tuition which cost more than $85,000 with the Fiji National University. ....
