Townsville City Council is urging residents in low-lying areas to prepare their properties ahead of the expected king tides.
The tides are predicted to reach a peak of 3.86m at 8:30am on Wednesday 10 February, and 3.84m at 9am on Thursday 11 February.
Residents living in or visiting areas that may be affected – such as South Townsville, Railway Estate, Hanran Street and Ogden Street – should observe all warning and road closures.
Residents should also move any valuable and cars that could be impacted by salt-water flooding if they are concerned.
Anyone driving through impacted areas should remain vigilant around flooded roads – if it’s flooded, forget it. ....

Historic Beer Birthday: Thomas Aitken
Today is the birthday of Thomas Aitken (January 5, 1821-January 5, 1884). He was born in Scotland, but emigrated to Australia in 1842, when he was 19. “In 1851 he founded the Corio Brewery in Geelong, and later started the Union Brewery in Melbourne. By 1854 he was in business at Victoria Parade, East Melbourne, where he had built a new brewery, distillery and malthouse. The large complex was called the Victoria Parade Brewery,” which was later known simply as the Victoria Brewery. He also developed the formula for their most popular beer, Victoria Bitter, also in 1854. When Thomas died in 1884, his son Archibald took over the brewery, but today it is owned by Carlton & United Breweries, which in turn was acquired by SABMiller, although last year, Asahi Breweries bought Carlton & United. ....

HERE are just a few of the drink and drug drivers who have recently fronted Ipswich Magistrates Court.

Brendan Francis Fleming, 28, from Blackstone, pleaded guilty in Ipswich District Court to drug driving when on an L/P licence in Ironbark on September 12.
Fined $600 and licence disqualified for five months.
Bienfait Kwana, 25, from Logan Central, pleaded guilty to drink driving at Greenbank on August 22.
Fined $300 and disqualified for one month.
Kurt Wayne Parnaby, 40, from Ipswich, was fined $500 and licence disqualified for three months when he pleaded guilty to drug positive driving in Dinmore on September 24.
Craig Anthony Patterson, 43, from Karalee, lost his licence for four months and fined $500 when he pleaded guilty to driving when drug positive and on L/P licence in Karana Downs on July 13. ....
