Young child dies from COVID-19 in Tippecanoe County

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WISH) A young child in Tippecanoe County has died from COVID-19, according to the Tippecanoe County Health Department.
The department on Thursday announced a child younger than 5 died while hospitalized for COVID-19.
“This tragic occurrence reminds us that COVID-19 can cause serious, even fatal, illness in children. In order to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and save lives, it is important that everyone continue established preventive measures,” the department said in a release sent to News 8.
The health department said it strongly recommends everyone older than 2 to wear a mask in businesses, indoor public spaces, outdoor spaces where social distance can’t be maintained, and while using public transportation. ....

Lafayette to resume 'Fresh Air Eats,' shut downtown streets for dining

LAFAYETTE Following a successful fall launch of Fresh Air Eats, a program originally designed to increase customers to downtown restaurants while keeping capacity limits, the Lafayette Board of Works approved the 2021 schedule Tuesday for the upcoming weekend events.
Fresh Air Eats will begin in May and run through October. Held monthly, it will start on Friday evening and will run through Sunday evening.
In May, the event will be held during the third and fourth weekend of the month to accommodate for Purdue s graduation, May 14 to May 16, and a statewide firefighter convention held in Lafayette from May 20-23.
Other dates planned for the rest of the year include June 18-20, July 16-18, Aug. 13-15, Sept. 24-26 and Oct. 8-10. ....

Following State, Tippecanoe County Suspends Use of Johnson & Johnson Vaccine

The decision comes as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention launched an investigation after six of the 6.8-million people who took the vaccine developed rare blood clots.
The six cases developed in women between the ages of 18 and 48, with symptoms occurring between six and 13 days after vaccination. According to the CDC and FDA, treatment of this particular type of blood clot is different from a more typical clot.
In a written statement, Tippecanoe County Health Officer Dr. Jeremy Adler noted that the number of people to develop the blood clot is less than one in a million, and it isn’t yet clear if the clotting problem is caused by the vaccine. ....
