Use of J&J vaccine in Luzerne County varied by provider

Some local providers administered all doses of the COVID-19 vaccine manufactured by Janssen / Johnson & Johnson prior to an order Tuesday to suspend its use, but at least one major provider didnât use any.
The state Department of Health allocated a combined 6,400 doses of the J&J vaccine to seven providers in Luzerne County last week â four to eight days before U.S. health officials recommended pausing use of the vaccine to give the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration time to investigate six cases of J&J recipients developing unusual blood clots. ....

DOC: Two SCI-Dallas officers sickened by drug-laced mail

The state Department of Corrections has changed its mail-handling policies after two correctional officers at State Correctional Institution at Dallas were sickened and hospitalized from tainted mail, officials said.
Mail containing K-2, also known as spice, was recently sent to the Jackson Twp. prison, exposing the officers to the synthetic marijuana, the department said in a news release.
The mail was designed to appear as if it was coming from the court system, which did not require a pre-approved control number as did mail from others, such as attorneys, the department said.
As a result of the SCI-Dallas incident, mail coming from the courts will now also require a special, pre-approved control number assigned by the department. ....

Police investigating inmate death at SCI-Dallas

The release said inmate Edgar Gearhart, 24, was found unresponsive around 8:30 p.m. Thursday.
Correctional officers and medical staff immediately responded to administer life-saving measures, but were unsuccessful, the department said.
Medics responded to the facility and declared Gearhart dead, authorities said.
The cause and manner of death is pending an investigation by the Luzerne County Coronerâs Office.
Gearhart was serving a 10- to 20-year sentence for third-degree murder out of Northumberland County, the department said. He had been at SCI-Dallas since June 2019.
Gearhart stabbed his mother and killed her boyfriend in 2015, according to newspaper archives from The Daily Item in Sunbury. ....
