The Cape boys’ winter track team hosted Sussex Academy Feb. 4 at Legends Stadium, and the Vikings topped the Seahawks 110-4 in track & field action.
High scorer John Small won three events for the Vikings, taking the 55-meter hurdles in 8.29, the long jump in 20-feet-2-inches, and the triple jump in 38-feet. Hunter Jones took the 1,600 meters in 4:52, with Daniel Adili-Khams second in 4:55. Julian Calloway took the 800 meters in 2:06, while Andrew Wolak won the 400 meters in 55.5. Josiah Miller tossed the shot 46-feet-7-inches, while Ryan Baker ran 10:20 in the 3,200 meters by himself. His time is one of the top 15 performances ever in a dual meet at Cape.    ....

Indoor/outdoors - An indoor track meet held outdoors Jan. 22 on Cape’s Legends Stadium track featured visiting Sussex Central at Cape, both boys and girls. There were 14 events contested with the weather described as “not bad for January.”
Skyler McVicker and
P.J. Stratton, two stalwarts off the Golden Knights’ state championship football team, won the first two open events, with McVicker capturing the 55-meter hurdles in 9.71 seconds and Stratton the 55-meter dash in 6.96. Stratton also won the 200 meters 23:04. Central won nine of 14 events, but the Cape boys showed breadth of depth and won the meet 61-43. ....

Ja’Vaughn Burton
This 6-foot-1 senior wing will take on the alpha dog role for the Cape High boys’ basketball team in 2021. An electric scorer with range all the way to Surf Bagel, “J-Roc” looks primed to improve on the team-high 15 points he averaged last season. “I’m trying to be more of a ‘take it to the rack’ player [this year], more of an iso player,” Burton said. “Coach [Shemik Thompson] isn’t running plays for me. He sees me as someone who can get a bucket whenever we need one.” The young Vikings will lean on Burton’s experience, as well. “I’m trying to be a leader and show everyone how it’s supposed to be done,” he said. Burton just finished a successful football season that saw him earn all-conference honors as a wide receiver, and his numbers in the classroom are just as impressive. ....

This week, as school wraps up and the holiday vacation begins, presents are under the tree, stockings are hung, but things are sure different from the norm. Very few races were held this fall and almost none this past summer. The Seashore Striders were fortunate enough to host the Seashore Classic half marathon/5K and the Great Pumpkin 5K in October, the Pumpkin Pie 5K in November and the Run with Santa 5K in December. The Striders raised money for a local family that lost their home to a fire, and collected canned goods for a local food drive. One of my favorite holiday traditions is to team up with Apple Electric’s Steve and Lisa Prestipino and Toys ....
