ENNISCORTHY TRICOLOUR FIRST FLOWN ON THIS DAY 173 YEARS AGO
A momentous event in Irish history is being celebrated today as the first flying of the modern tricolour in Enniscorthy is being remembered 173 years on.
The flag we recognise with the Green White and Gold was raised for the first time in Enniscorthy and Waterford City on the 7th of March 1848.
Originally it was thought just one flag was raised by Thomas Francis Meagher, a leader of the Young Irelanders on the Mall in Waterford but evidence of the Enniscorthy flag, including an article in the Freeman’s journal was verified in 2015. ....

On 7 March 1848 the Irish Tricolour was first flown at 33 the Mall by Waterford-born Thomas Francis Meagher. The Tricolour was adopted as the flag of the Irish State with the achievement of independence in 1922, a decision confirmed in the present Constitution of Ireland, which was enacted in 1937. Meagher saw the flag as a symbol of peace between all the people of Ireland:
‘The white in the centre signifies a lasting truce between the ‘Orange’ and the ‘Green’, and I trust that beneath its folds, the Irish Protestant [the ‘Orange’] and the Irish Catholic [the ‘Green’] may be clasped in generous and heroic brotherhood.” ....

Former spokesman for Colorado Democrats joins White House press office

Chris Meagher, a former spokesman for the Colorado Democratic Party and veteran communications adviser to several leading Democrats, has been hired as a deputy White House press secretary.
Currently the top spokesman for Transportation Secretary Pete Buttieigeg, Meagher starts the new job Wednesday, the Washington Post first reported. He will replace TJ Ducklo, who resigned last month following allegations he had threatened a Politico reporter.
“Chris brings a depth of experience both in government and on political campaigns, as well as a commitment to engagement, to integrity and to ensuring the public has access to information, and I could not be more thrilled to welcome him as a senior member of the White House press team,” White House press secretary Jen Psaki said in a statement to news organizations. ....

Roots: The Mighty Meaghers | Irish America

A Look at the Meaghers and Mahers
The Meagher name stems from the medieval Gaelic O’ Meachair, derived from meachar, meaning hospitable or kind, but the kindness of the Meaghers certainly hasn’t taken away from their strength and power.
The name, also recorded as O’Meagher, Maher, Meagar, O’Maher, Mahar and Mahir, still holds prominence in Ireland. Over fifty percent of those bearing variations on the name come from County Tipperary, where the clan originated. The O’Meachair clan kept control over Ikerrin near the modern town of Roscrea, at the foot of the famous Devil’s Bit Mountain in northern Tipperary. During the Norman invasion in the 10th century, the O’Meachairs refused to be ousted from their territory, unlike some other Gaelic clans, and held onto their traditional lands up to the Cromwellian period. ....
