Your view: Castle Barracks a 'cold house' for Nationalist identity

Castle Barracks a ‘cold house’ for Nationalist identity
Dear Sir,
Afford me please the space to respond to last week’s article on ‘the Tricolour’s raising at castle’.
It seems highly appropriate to write on this issue on this week which marks the creation of Northern Ireland arising from the partitioning of Ireland.
The article refers to the Tricolour as the Republic of Ireland flag. This, in my opinion is factually incorrect. It is and has been called the Irish flag in my lifetime i.e that pertaining to the whole geographical entity of Ireland.
The article speculates widely as to the motive of the raising of the Tricolour but what is clear to all is that the overnight foray, in my opinion, has happened at the Enniskillen Castle Barracks site for a reason.  ....

First raising of the Irish Tricolour in Waterford on 7 March 1848 remembered

Waterford, Ireland / WLR
Mar 7, 2021 10:36 AM
On 7 March 1848 the Irish Tricolour was first flown at 33 the Mall by Waterford-born Thomas Francis Meagher. The Tricolour was adopted as the flag of the Irish State with the achievement of independence in 1922, a decision confirmed in the present Constitution of Ireland, which was enacted in 1937. Meagher saw the flag as a symbol of peace between all the people of Ireland:
‘The white in the centre signifies a lasting truce between the ‘Orange’ and the ‘Green’, and I trust that beneath its folds, the Irish Protestant [the ‘Orange’] and the Irish Catholic [the ‘Green’] may be clasped in generous and heroic brotherhood.” ....

Bertie Ahern: Border poll on a united Ireland 'should be held in 2028'

Former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern has said a border poll on a united Ireland should be held to coincide with the 30th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement.
Mr Ahern said rather than forcing one in the short-term, the right time to have a vote would be 2028.
He told Pat Kenny he brought up this very issue on the 20th anniversary of the accord, when speaking with George Mitchell, Tony Blair and Bill Clinton.
I don t like the idea of border poll because it is an issue of sovereignty and how it ll happen - but anyway, we all know what is meant by it ....

Over 100,000 coronavirus deaths have now been recorded. The UK has a death rate of 1471 per million of population. Only Belgium and Slovenia have higher rates and even the US with its much-criticised handling of the epidemic has a lower rate than the UK.
Regrettably the UK government’s approach to controlling the virus is not working and alternative or additional measures should be considered. UK governments have instituted measures to control the movement of people in the UK but have done little to control the entry of people into the UK, in fact some 4,000,000 people have entered the country from all corners of the world bringing the virus and its variants with them. ....
