The Commodity Futures Trading Commission today announced that N. Charles “Charlie” Thornton III will leave the agency for a new opportunity in the private sector. Since 2017, Mr. Thornton has served in multiple leadership roles at the CFTC under two Chairmen, most recently as Chief of Staff and Chief Operating Officer under Chairman Tarbert. Previously, he served as Counselor to Chairman Tarbert, developing, communicating, executing, and sustaining the CFTC’s strategic initiatives.
From 2017 to 2019, Mr. Thornton served as Director of the Office of Legislative and Intergovernmental Affairs (OLIA) under Chairman Giancarlo, where he was the agency’s lead liaison with Members of Congress and key executive branch agencies, and the Chairman’s top advisor on all legislative matters. OLIA’s efforts were integral in achieving an increase in the CFTC’s budget after many years of flat or reduced funding. Mr. ....

Congress agrees to complex aid to farmers and the hungry

Congress has reached agreement on a huge combined fiscal year 2021 omnibus appropriations bill and coronavirus aid package that includes various forms of aid to farmers, an increase of 15% in benefits under the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) for six months, and other nutrition assistance.
After Congress passed a 24-hour continuing resolution Sunday to fund the government though midnight tonight, the House is expected to vote on the package today.
It’s not yet clear whether the Senate will vote on the package today or whether Congress will pass a week-long continuing resolution to allow the Senate to vote at a more leisurely pace and send the package to President Donald Trump. ....

At last Tuesday s virtual Midwest Pork Conference, keynote speaker Ray Starling recounted a meeting he had with President Trump in the Oval Office in early 2017. During the meeting, Trump abruptly stopped the discussion and aggressively pushed a red button on his desk. Fearing the worst, Starling said he was both surprised and much relieved to learn that was a signal for a White House staffer to bring the president a diet Coke.
