A project to increase the health data literacy of youth has received funding through the University of Illinois Extension Collaboration Grant Program. Rachel M. Magee, assistant professor in the School of Information Sciences at Illinois (iSchool), will lead the project, Health Data Literacy Ambassadors, with iSchool Associate Professors Catherine Blake and Jana Diesner serving as co-investigators. Funded through the Office of the Provost s Investment for Growth Program and University of Illinois Extension, the grant supports research and partnerships that address critical issues in five key areas: food, economy, environment, community, and health.
In the two-year project, iSchool researchers and Extension staff will build on existing 4-H Ambassadors and Advocate models to create a Health Data Literacy Ambassadors program. ....

Consumers are searching online but not buying. Why?

Key Takeaways:
Discounting or couponing is not the most effective way to tap the power of retargeting in online marketing.
Customized seller recommendations may be more powerful than discounting.
Seller auctions that allow marketers to self-select in the retargeting process improve cost efficiency.
CATONSVILLE, MD, April 1, 2021 - Online marketers have seen the pattern: 95%-98% of online visitors search for something, but the search never converts into a purchase and they leave the site without buying. For marketers, this results in speculation and assumptions that can lead to wasted time and investments in ineffective marketing programs.
One of the more common ways online marketers attempt to solve this problem is to retarget, which tracks those consumers and reconnects with them at a later point by showing display ads when they browse other websites. You ve probably noticed this when using Google Search to find something, such as a pair of shoes, and then ....

A remedy for the spread of false news?

 E-Mail
Stopping the spread of political misinformation on social media may seem like an impossible task. But a new study co-authored by MIT scholars finds that most people who share false news stories online do so unintentionally, and that their sharing habits can be modified through reminders about accuracy.
When such reminders are displayed, it can increase the gap between the percentage of true news stories and false news stories that people share online, as shown in online experiments that the researchers developed.
Getting people to think about accuracy makes them more discerning in their sharing, regardless of ideology, says MIT professor David Rand, co-author of a newly published paper detailing the results. And it translates into a scalable and easily implementable intervention for social media platforms. ....

Study Reveals New Hope for Men With Common Urinary Issues
A new systematic review of evidence recommends the use of behavioral self-management treatments for common urinary issues experienced by upwards of 70 percent of older men. Common symptoms include trouble urinating, increased frequency and incontinence. These symptoms can have a substantial negative impact on sleep, social functioning and quality of life. Several guidelines recommend self-management techniques like health education, advice on fluid intake, and bladder retraining; however, in practice, self-management is often excluded from the menu of treatment options that include medication and surgery.
Researchers at Bond University s Institute for Evidence-Based Healthcare found that self-management interventions reduced the severity of lower urinary tract symptoms. The reduction in symptoms appeared similar in groups receiving medications versus self-management interventions. However, compared with drugs alone, ....
