11Alive has learned Atlanta’s former police chief warned the city that it needed to reform the way it disciplines officers accused of using unnecessary force after discovering flaws in its system. More than a year and a half later, her recommendations have never been implemented. Former Police Chief Erika Shields’ recommendations were outlined in a December 2020 court deposition as part of a pending federal lawsuit involving a current officer accused of using unnecessary force. The deposition occurred while she was employed by the city, but was no longer leading the department. ► UNNECESSARY POLICE FORCE: Attorneys who filed the lawsuit claim Atlanta officer Donald Vickers used unnecessary force when he tackled their client, Tyler Griffin, in April 2019 during a traffic stop. The incident broke Griffin’s left ankle. ....
A new audience experience awaits patrons on Friday when New Bern Civic Theatre reopens for its first major production in more than a year. There are some new protocols put in obviously for COVID, said Civic Executive Director Angelina Doyle. The first thing is we still require masks and that is unless they are eating or drinking. Smaller audience sizes, along with ongoing COVID-19 restrictions will be in place. The satirical two-man comedy Greater Tuna is slated for five 7:30 p.m. shows on May 14, 15, 21 and 22, along with 2 p.m. matinees May 16 and 21. It will be the first major show other than several performances by Walk-In Bathtub Improv since February 2020. ....

Without its star running back, Holly Springs offense found a spark in the second half and broke a 7-7 halftime tie with Fuquay-Varina to claim a key South Wake Athletic Conference win. Holly Springs scored three touchdowns in the second half en route to a 28-13 win over the Bengals. The Golden Hawks played the second half without running back Derek Coombs, who was sidelined with an injury. With the two teams tied at 7-7 in the third quarter, Holly Springs quarterback Brock Wills found Tyler Griffin for the go-ahead touchdown. That put the Hawks on top 14-7, and they never trailed again after that point. ....
