Chamber leaders slam agencies' opposition to Sleepyhead's Ōhinewai development plans

The Detail podcast hears how decades after the last big company town was built, Kiwi bed manufacturer Sleepyhead is pouring new life into the concept.
In May, a panel of independent commissioners decided in favour of rezoning the 176 hectares of farmland, but that decision now faces a delay in the latest appeals.
Waikato Chamber of Commerce chief executive Don Good said the regional council’s appeal looked like “nitpicking”.
“The business community has had a bit of a gutsful of councils using bureaucracy to slow progress down when we live in a country that needs housing, that needs infrastructure, and we needed it yesterday,” Good told ....

South Australia is the first to ban single-use plastics. When will the other states follow suit? - Hack


From Monday, South Australia s going to be a little bit greener.
Not only is the state a leader in renewable energy, it s also the first jurisdiction in the country to ban all single-use plastic items.
From 1 March 2021 all single-use plastic straws, cutlery and plastic stirrers will be banned across South Australia. Drinking straws will still be allowed to be given to people with a disability or medical requirement .
Other single use plastic items will be banned in a second stage next year, while other items like takeaway coffee cups need further analysis and consultation .
There s even fines for those that break the new laws - with maximum penalties of up to $20,000. ....

Forest and Bird on Mt Messenger Bypass: 'Sacrificing nature for human convenience'

The $200 million project is inching closer to a start date after a High Court appeal against re-routing the highway through the Mangapēpeke Valley was lost earlier in December.
Forest and Bird chief executive Kevin Hague said he was not a party to this appeal, but had opposed the bypass from the beginning.
We are sad about the outcome but the outcome does seem to be settled now. We don t think we can change it, Hague said.
For us, it is another example of nature once again giving way to kind of human endeavour and we ve just lost so much we actually can t afford to keep sacrificing nature for human convenience, which is exactly what the bypass is about. ....
