Family celebrates mortgage payoff Voice Correspondent McDONOUGH COUNTY The owners of the first home built by the McDonough County chapter of Habitat for Humanity were recognized on Thursday morning for being the first to pay off their home. Nancy and Perry Sinnett received the first home in McDonough County and are also the first to completely pay off their home after 24 years of living in the location. Habitat for Humanity Executive Director Keith Branham said that one of the most impressive things about the Sinnetts was their ability to pay off the home so quickly, saying that they paid like clockwork on the road to paying off the home. ....
SRC discusses college status, budget and vaccine Devon Greene Voice Correspondent CANTON/MACOMB The Spoon River College board met on Wednesday evening to discuss the state of the college along with its budget and the incoming COVID-19 vaccine. A main focus concerned the fate of the college s budget at the state level due to the future of the Illinois Speaker of the House being up in the air at the moment. If there is no speaker, there will be no mechanism for consideration of any legislation, handling of committee assignments, chairmanships or legislative calendar. The Interstate Community College Trustees Association Representative also said that the state budget is facing a projected $3.9 billion shortfall in this year’s fiscal budget, and that the graduated income tax amendment that was on the ballot in November was the supposed resolution to the budget issue. Santa visits Colchester Voice Correspondent COLCHESTER Cold weather and a bit of rain didn’t stop Santa Claus from making a stop in Colchester on Friday evening to bring some holiday spirit to families during the holiday season. At 6 p.m. on Friday evening, members of the Colchester Police Force and Fire Department escorted Claus to the C.A.R.E Food Pantry where he sat inside and greeted families in their cars while his helpers delivered a goodie bag to those who stopped by. Director of the Colchester Library, Debbie Sullivan coordinated the event and said that it was important for the kids to have some avenue to get out and celebrate this December. ....
One Human Family to present webinar on White Power Devon Greene Voice Correspondent MACOMB As the attention on racial justice became one of the main focuses across the United States this summer, a bipartisan organization focused on racial justice and equality came to Macomb in November. The organization, One Human Family got started in the Macomb community with their police body cameras campaign that raised enough money to purchase body cameras for the Macomb Police Department. One Human Family is hosting a free Webinar on Wednesday, Dec. 16 at 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. entitled “The White Power Movement and Paramilitary America” that will focus on educating those who attend about the white power movement and what people can do to in their local communities to combat it. ....
Colchester approves purchases, hires part-time officer Devon Greene Voice Correspondent COLCHESTER The Colchester City Council approved several purchases on Tuesday night for improvements around the city as well as the hiring of a part-time police officer. In a fast-moving meeting on Tuesday, the council approved the purchase of a computer and docking station for a squad car for a total not to exceed $4,500. The council also approved the payment of officers for attending Active Shooter Trainings in Macomb and approved the purchase of an Active Trainer Kit. The council also looked forward to 2021 when they will hire a part-time police officer who currently works in Macomb with WIU and the hospital. Alderman Tim Smith said that the officer will start sometime after Jan. 1. ....
