MY EDMONDS NEWS Posted: May 21, 2021 Ann McMurray After nearly two decades, Edmonds School Board Director Ann McMurray said she will not be seeking reelection to the District 2 seat. McMurray was first elected in 2005 and said after serving 16 years on the board, the timing was right for her to step down as she and her husband approach retirement. McMurray’s term will officially end Dec. 31. Keith Smith and Melissa Stepp have filed for the seat and will face off in the Nov. 2 election. District 2 includes the southeast portion of the school district Mountlake Terrace, Brier and unincorporated areas nearby. Candidates must live in the director district they want to represent, but voters from throughout the school district elect board members from all five director districts. ....
MY EDMONDS NEWS Posted: April 28, 2021 118 The Edmonds School Board Tuesday night heard from Spruce Elementary School second-grade students about their work to help orphaned baby bears at PAWS in Lynnwood. Due to a drop in student enrollment, the Edmonds School District is working to find jobs for dozens of displaced teachers or risk issuing them pink slips by mid-May. Since March 2020, the district has seen an enrollment decrease of 173 FTE students. At the Edmonds School Board of Directors’ April 27 business meeting, staff explained that the decline in student enrollment has left the district with 47.02 FTE (full-time equivalent) employees at risk of being displaced. However, with 50.3 FTE vacancies to fill, Human Resources Director Debby Carter said staff are optimistic they will not have to resort to layoffs. ....

Just days after announcing plans to return more students to school buildings, the Edmonds School District is scrambling to change pace following a new directive from the governor to offer in-person learning to students at all grade levels by mid-April 2021. “We know our students and families have been struggling for nearly a year, as it was March 13, 2020, when we were ordered to close all schools due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Superintendent Gustavo Balderas said in a statement to the news media Friday. “We will share more information about next steps to meet the governor’s mandate soon.” ....
MY EDMONDS NEWS Posted: February 19, 2021 Superintendent Gustavo Balderas After weeks of negotiations, the Edmonds School District announced Friday its bargaining team struck a tentative agreement with teachers that would bring more students back to classrooms by the end of March. In a letter to families, District Superintendent Gustavo Balderas said the district’s bargaining team has reached a tentative agreement with the Edmonds Education Association which represents the district’s certified teaching staff to open classrooms to kindergarten, first- and second-grade students as well additional special education and early childhood programs. According to Balderas, this Stage 2 re-entry plan will begin March 22 with second graders. ....
