Ann McMurray
After nearly two decades, Edmonds School Board Director Ann McMurray said she will not be seeking reelection to the District 2 seat.
McMurray was first elected in 2005 and said after serving 16 years on the board, the timing was right for her to step down as she and her husband approach retirement. McMurray’s term will officially end Dec. 31. Keith Smith and Melissa Stepp have filed for the seat and will face off in the Nov. 2 election.
District 2 includes the southeast portion of the school district Mountlake Terrace, Brier and unincorporated areas nearby. Candidates must live in the director district they want to represent, but voters from throughout the school district elect board members from all five director districts. ....

Due to a drop in student enrollment, the Edmonds School District is working to find jobs for dozens of displaced teachers or risk issuing them pink slips by mid-May.
Since March 2020, the district has seen an enrollment decrease of 173 FTE students. At the Edmonds School Board of Directors’ April 27 business meeting, staff explained that the decline in student enrollment has left the district with 47.02 FTE (full-time equivalent) employees at risk of being displaced. However, with 50.3 FTE vacancies to fill, Human Resources Director Debby Carter said staff are optimistic they will not have to resort to layoffs. ....

Voters in the Edmonds School District will soon receive a ballot in your mailbox, and I am asking you to join me in voting yes in support of the school capital levy. The levy will provide much-needed funding for safety upgrades, maintenance and operation of our schools, and building additional capacity to meet present and future population growth.
Before the pandemic closure in March 2020, it would have been hard to imagine what our communities would look like without public schools. Now, we have an idea. Children, families and community members rely on Edmonds School District not only for the high-quality education we provide, but also for healthy meals, fitness and health, safe neighborhoods, community building, entertainment, jobs, economic development, emotional support, and much more. ....
