Just days after announcing plans to return more students to school buildings, the Edmonds School District is scrambling to change pace following a new directive from the governor to offer in-person learning to students at all grade levels by mid-April 2021.
“We know our students and families have been struggling for nearly a year, as it was March 13, 2020, when we were ordered to close all schools due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Superintendent Gustavo Balderas said in a statement to the news media Friday. “We will share more information about next steps to meet the governor’s mandate soon.” ....

Aiming to address overcrowding at both Sherwood and Westgate elementary schools, the Edmonds School District Tuesday announced its plans to repurpose the former Woodway Elementary School campus to house kindergarten students from both schools.
The district’s Capacity Advisory Committee recently voted to recommend that the superintendent approve the creation of a kindergarten campus in the former Woodway Elementary School building, located at 9521 240th St. S.W. in Edmonds. The site will open its doors to students at the start of the 2021-22 school year. ....

As Edmonds School District leaders prepare to reopen school buildings to students, they are facing concerns about disruptions to student learning and educators’ health that make parents hesitant to return kids to classrooms for the remainder of the school year.
Since schools closed last March, district staff have been juggling how to create methods for remote learning while developing plans to safely bring students back into schools. Last November, the district implemented the first stage of its four-phase school re-entry plan, returning nearly 150 students enrolled in special education and intensive support. Now, the district is preparing to move into Stage 2, which would bring K-2 students back using the hybrid learning model approved last July. ....
