With plans to return students to in-person learning starting this fall, the Edmonds School Board Monday night discussed several matters that need to be addressed before the school district brings students back to classrooms five days a week.
During the board’s regular school building re-entry briefing, Superintendent Gustavo Balderas announced plans to offer students the option to return to in-person learning five days a week for the 2021-22 school year or stay 100% remote.

The Edmonds School Board Tuesday night heard from Spruce Elementary School second-grade students about their work to help orphaned baby bears at PAWS in Lynnwood.
Due to a drop in student enrollment, the Edmonds School District is working to find jobs for dozens of displaced teachers or risk issuing them pink slips by mid-May.
Since March 2020, the district has seen an enrollment decrease of 173 FTE students. At the Edmonds School Board of Directors’ April 27 business meeting, staff explained that the decline in student enrollment has left the district with 47.02 FTE (full-time equivalent) employees at risk of being displaced. However, with 50.3 FTE vacancies to fill, Human Resources Director Debby Carter said staff are optimistic they will not have to resort to layoffs.

Due to a decrease in student enrollment, the Edmonds School District Board of Directors’ Tuesday will consider adopting a reduced educational plan for the 2021-22 school year.
At its April 27 business meeting, the board will hold the first reading for a reduced educational program that may see some staffing reductions. Impacted staff are set to be notified by May 15.
Also during the meeting, the board is set to hold a first reading to adopt revisions to the district’s sexual education policy to bring it in line with the recently passed SB 5395 Comprehensive Sexual Health Education. Per the meeting agenda, updates clarify that in grades K-3 social emotional learning is the focus and that comprehensive sexual health education will take place in grades 4-5. The reporting requirements are consistent with what the district already have in place.
