Marine scientists are to begin investigating mysterious blue balls that have been washing up on Dublin beaches as efforts continue to find out where they are coming from. The small objects are thought to be taprogge balls, commonly used in heavy industry, and while similar ones have been traced to the Hartlepool nuclear power plant in the UK, the origins of those in Dublin remain unknown. ....

The newest addition to Dublin’s nautical fleet is part of the River Liffey Cleaning Project, the brainchild of Irish Nautical Trust Director Jimmy Murray, whose ambition is to remove all floating debris from the Liffey, the Dodder and the Tolka estuary. ....
Liffey Sweeper Launched to Clean Dublin s Waterways By Mike Gilmore A new river cleaning vessel has been launched by the Irish Nautical Trust. The Liffey Sweeper is designed to gather up large amounts of debris from the city s waterways. Part of the River Liffey Cleaning Project, the vessel will collect waste such as bottles, plastic and cans. The vessel, will operate four days a week, gathering waste from the Liffey at Butt Bridge all the way down to the mouth of the river at Clontarf, including areas around Dublin Port. It s design allows it to collect rubbish just beneath the surface of the water along with any floating items such as plastic, all of which is funneled into a cage before being removed and sorted for recycling and waste management. ....
