Jimmy Murray, Director of the Irish Nautical Trust in Dublin, is our Sailor of the Month for April in the Environmental category for the key role he played in the commissioning of the purpose-built Liffey Sweeper, which appropriately made its debut with the backing of Dublin Port on Earth Day, Thursday, April 22nd.
The well-established Irish Nautical Trust has been active for years in bringing the port and the young people of the city together in various projects. But the innovative concept of the marine-debris-gathering Liffey Sweeper has captured public imagination in a special way by pressing all the right buttons regarding many contemporary concerns.

The Irish Nautical Trust has launched the “Liffey Sweeper”, a new environmental vessel designed to collect large amounts of non-natural debris such as plastic, cans and bottles from the city’s waterways.
The newest addition to Dublin’s nautical fleet is part of the River Liffey Cleaning Project, the brainchild of Irish Nautical Trust Director Jimmy Murray, whose ambition is to remove all floating debris from the Liffey, the Dodder and the Tolka estuary.

A new vessel has been launched to collect debris from the rivers of Dublin city, including the River Liffey.
The Irish Nautical Trust says the Liffey Sweeper will gather non-natural matter such as plastic, cans and bottles.
The vessel is part of the River Liffey Cleaning Project, which aims to remove all floating debris from the river, as well as the River Dodder and the River Tolka estuary.

A NEW BOAT which is specially designed to collect litter from the River Liffey has been launched in Dublin.
The Liffey Sweeper will remove plastic, cans and bottles from the upper part of the river and surrounding basins and shipping berths four days a week.
It was launched by the Irish Nautical Trust, a registered charity which aims to protect maritime heritage in and around the Dublin Port area.

A MAN HAS been jailed for two years for an assault which left the victim so traumatised that he dropped out of his college course and didn’t get his degree.
Dean Fitzpatrick (28) punched David Curran as he was leaving a fast food restaurant at the end of a night out in Dublin city. The victim said that the last thing he remembered before waking up in hospital was walking out onto Grafton street.
