On the race to vaccinate, and why it's a race we must win — and why (again) Lancaster County needs a health department [editorial]

THE ISSUE
Gov. Tom Wolf reported Friday that Pennsylvania ranked 13th in the nation in first doses of COVID-19 vaccines administered; 32.4% of Pennsylvanians had received at least one dose; 1.92 million Pennsylvanians were fully vaccinated; more than 5.4 million vaccines had been administered; and more than 1.6 million seniors had received at least one dose.
In the battle to defeat COVID-19, we are making real progress via vaccination.
The nation had, by Thursday, “administered 20 million shots in seven days,” President Joe Biden said Friday.
And Pennsylvania is climbing the state rankings for vaccines administered, which is both amazing and surprising, given the commonwealth’s slow and rocky start in the race to vaccinate. ....

3 more municipalities set to consider county health department resolution

More municipalities are joining Manheim Township in calling on Lancaster County to create a health department.
On Monday, Denver Borough officials offered informal support to the issue and said they would hold a vote on a formal resolution in the future.
In Columbia Borough, where a vote on a resolution will be taken later this month, council President Heather Zink said last week that “with the pandemic, we need to have something on a local level.” She also cited a health department’s potential impact on much-needed mental health services.
And in the county seat, Lancaster City Council is planning to hold a vote Monday on a resolution that council President Ismail Smith-Wade-El expects will pass unanimously. ....

Is there a gender difference in the pay of the county's health and medical preparedness coordinator? [Lancaster Watchdog]

The person hired to fill a newly created full-time public health position in the Lancaster County Emergency Management Agency is being paid nearly 50% less than the private consultant hired last year to advise the county on managing the COVID-19 pandemic.
That fact, revealed in a March 24 LNP | LancasterOnline story, drew a reader letter asking why the new full-time employee, a woman by the name of Violet De Stefano, is making less than Edwin Hurston, the male consultant hired last year. In other words, is the county engaging in a sexist employment practice by paying De Stefano less for similar work? ....

Lancaster on track to reach 6,000 shots per day next week, as Pa. rapidly expands COVID-19 vaccine eligibility

Lancaster County’s mass vaccination site is on track to hit its daily capacity of giving 6,000 doses each day next week, as the state accelerates its coronavirus vaccine timeline to make all adults eligible by April 19.
The Lancaster County mass vaccination center at Park City mall will receive at least 20,000 first doses each week, said Dr. Michael Ripchinski, chief operating officer for Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health. That’s in addition to its existing second-dose commitments for about 20,000 people per week, which brings the site’s grand total to approximately 40,000 doses each week, or about 5,700 per day.
“It’s very positive and exciting news for the county and the region,” Ripchinski said of the accelerated timeline. “The Lancaster County vaccination center is well positioned right now to accommodate the rapid increase of those who are eligible.” ....
