[email protected] LEWISTOWN An incident that occurred Thursday morning prompted administrators at Mifflin County School District to be proactive in preventing student and staff injuries. Chief Operations Officer Vance Varner described to the district’s board of directors, during its regular voting meeting, an incident that occurred on a school bus in which an elementary student was taken to the hospital after a fire extinguisher was accidentally engaged and emptied. After emergency crews arrived on scene, they found the pin of the fire extinguisher had wiggled loose and that the extinguisher did not have a plastic retaining strap to hold the pin in place. ....
[email protected] LEWISTOWN Senior class officers at Mifflin County High School would prefer to hold a drive-thru graduation in a similar style to last year when given the option to hold the ceremony at Mitchell Field. Chief Operations Officer Vance Varner explained to the district’s board of directors Thursday that COVID-19 restrictions of six-feet apart per cohort would require students to limit the number of tickets each student could get no more than four. Restrictions would also cause the ceremony to be spread over three nights. Varner explained that, when asked, student class officers prefer to have the option to have more family at the ceremony. ....

[email protected] LEWISTOWN – Mifflin County school leaders are not optimistic about how Gov. Tom Wolf’s proposed budget will affect rural school districts. Mifflin County School District Chief Financial Officer Melinda Kenepp explained to the district’s board of directors Thursday during its Committee-of-the Whole meeting, that while the governor’s proposal shows a $1.3 billion increase to schools across the state, Mifflin County’s portion would be relatively low. Superintendent James Estep explained that if the state sticks to its current proposed formula, any school that is experiencing declining enrollment like Mifflin County and other rural school districts “is going to be seriously harmed in terms of what kind of basic and special ed funding they can get,” he said. “So, unfortunately, that means for a lot of rural schools like ours…we are going to see our state funding shrink even further, which would create some difficult decis ....

LEWISTOWN Mifflin County School District will return to in-person instruction beginning Monday, superintendent James Estep confirmed in a letter sent to parents Tuesday. It will be the first time students have been permitted to attend class inside the buildings since Nov. 6.
