, by James Conaway, to be published this spring by Alfred A. Knopf. “My only regret is that Dean isn’t here now, so I could tell him what a good job I did killing him.” He sits cross-legged on a folding chair in the hospital ward of the Harris County jailhouse, laughing and brandishing a Marlboro. White fatigues hang open at the neck, revealing a sunken chest and the colorless flesh of the restricted prisoner. Rubber thong sandals dangle from grubby toes; gone are the wispy beard and shoulder-length hair of those blurred news photos, replaced by dark, oily curls pressed against his head. Bluish acne scars cover his cheeks and the back of his neck; beneath curving brows lies the intimation of his reputed IQ of 126. The eyes dominate a face most notable for its nastiness, speckled green and too large, conveying an extraordinary distance that continues to impress long after the gaze wanders, the ready smile fades. ....
From left, Sam, Stu and Charles Smith of Smith-Madrone. Meg Smith photo Smith-Madrone launches a year of 50th anniversary celebrations on May 14. It was on May 14, 1971 that founder Stuart Smith signed the paperwork to close on the purchase of 200 forested acres on top of Spring Mountain outside St. Helena. To celebrate its 50th anniversary, Smith-Madrone has dug deep into its cellar and will be re-releasing wines on the 14th of every month through the anniversary year. In May there will be a six-bottle vertical of Cabernet Sauvignon, a horizontal collection of 2013 Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Riesling and Cookâs Flat and several other unusual wines. The re-released wines are very limited in availability and will appear on a specially designated page on the wineryâs website. ....
A successful career in the grapegrowing industry has given him a happy and comfortable life, but the memories of a hungry, impoverished childhood remain vivid for Rafael Rodriguez, even at the age of 100. Rodriguez, who hit the century mark on Christmas Day, spent Monday morning looking back on his eventful life and offering his advice for people who strive for his longevity and good health. âBe reasonable and respectful,â Rodriguez said, adding that heâs always lived day by day. âYou have to love people, tolerate their differences, and continue being submissive and humble.â The son of an illiterate textile worker and a mother who died in childbirth, Rodriguez was raised partly by his grandmother and aunts in Mexico City. They struggled to put food on the table, and Rodriguez longed for a better life. ....
Michael Broadbent (Alfred A Knopf, New York, 1980, $8 at a second-hand bookstore) Anyone who works in a research-based field needs reference books to answer questions, confirm facts and supply background information. I regularly consult encyclopedias and atlases. The Oxford Companion is, in my view, the most comprehensive and the most relevant of the many encyclopedias available. A principal virtue is that its entries are supplied by dozens of contributors, all experts in their fields. For example, the entries concerning Spain, my main tasting beat, are mostly written by Victor de la Serna, a journalist for El Mundo and one of the leading authorities on the country’s wines. It’s worth it to upgrade to new editions as they are published. ....
