What it's like: Reporter gets his second COVID-19 vaccination

Friday marked 28 days since my first COVID-19 vaccination with Pfizer’s vaccine.
At age 54, I was eligible for my first dose during Phase 1A of Pennsylvania’s vaccine rollout because I have chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder, an inflammatory lung disease similar to asthma. So, I accepted Geisinger’s invitation to write a first-hand account of the vaccination experience.
Half-way through the drive to Geisinger’s community vaccination site at CenterPoint Park in Jenkins Twp., panic struck.
“Oh, my God, did I bring my vaccination record card?” I thought, as adrenaline rushed through my body. Then, I remembered. I glanced down at the nook in my center console, and there was the card, where I put it earlier in the week so I wouldn’t forget it. ....

Remembering those we lost to COVID-19

Valeria Yackshaw Genetti, 83, Hazleton
The wife of Gus Genetti Jr., Val had a witty sense of humor and an endearing smile. Her favorite things were family and traveling, but mostly it was combining the two — traveling with her family around the world. She loved Neil Diamond and ABBA, enjoyed playing pinochle, reading Danielle Steele books, watching detective-cop shows and enjoying coffee in her bedroom in the mornings. She was the vice president of the Genetti Hospitality Group of Wilkes-Barre, Williamsport and Dickson City. She was a past board member of King’s College Century Club, past president of W-B Jaycettes, past president of Wilkes-Barre General Hospital Auxiliary, past board of directors of CYC, member of the Slovak Heritage Society and a volunteer of NEPA Red Cross Blood Center. She died Dec. 22. ....

8th Street Bridge being renamed for fallen PennDOT worker

The bridge will become known as the George J. Dennis Jr. Memorial Bridge.
The bridge will be named after George Dennis Jr., who was killed while at work for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation on Feb. 11, 1972.
State Sen. John Yudichak, I-14, of Swoyersville, and state Rep. Aaron Kaufer, R-120, of Kingston, announced the bridge naming recently.
“Our community was blessed in having such a dedicated and hard-working man like George Dennis Jr.,” Kaufer said. “The Dennis family has always been a well-known family through their heavy involvement in public service. George’s death was a loss that was truly felt by all in our area . I urge the governor to please sign this bill into law.” ....
