The creation of a lake management district with taxing authority and a territory limited to properties adjacent to Silver Lake will be the subject of a public meeting at 10 a.m., Saturday, May 29 at the Silver Lake Sportsman’s Club, 27021 85th St.
The meeting is being hosted by a group of residents leading the effort to create the new district. This meeting is geared toward those who don’t already know about the proposed Silver Lake Management District, said Jeffrey Bell, one of the leaders of the effort to create the district. ....

Turkmenistan has made no progress on eradicating forced labour from its cotton harvest, a new report finds.
Every year, the government of Turkmenistan forces tens of thousands of citizens to harvest cotton, the country’s second largest export after petroleum.
If workers fail to meet their cotton-picking quotas, they face punishment, harassment, or the loss of their jobs. This means that cotton products originating in Turkmenistan sold across the globe violate laws and other import bans that prohibit the sale of goods made with forced-labour.
“Cotton is a global commodity and doesn’t stay within borders,” says Allison Gill, the forced labour programem director at Global Labour Justice-International Labour Rights Forum, and the coordinator of the Cotton Campaign a multi-stakeholder coalition that has been working since 2008 to eradicate state-imposed forced and child labour in the ....

Bermudian court upholds 18-year sentence for Jamaican on drug rap

A Jamaican man who was imprisoned for 18 years in Bermuda after being convicted of importing heroin, has failed in his bid to have his sentence reduced.
Omar Davy, a 40-year-old resident of Mandeville, Manchester in Jamaica, cited “bad legal advice” for his decision to not initially plead guilty to the charge against him in Bermuda.
On that premise, he argued through his attorney in March, that his sentence should have been reduced.
In 2019, Davy was convicted in the Bermuda Supreme Court for possession of 220.88 grams of heroin worth US$765,700 on a flight from Toronto, Canada a year earlier.
Not satisfied with his sentence, Davy headed to the island s Court of Appeal, hoping that his jail time would be reduced. ....
