Officials call for curtailing holiday celebrations: COVID concerns are paramount

With the holidays here, along with a new surge of the COVIID-19 coronaovirus, Shelter Island officials are expressing concern about residents traveling and attending events.
While Suffolk County is reporting 23 cases of the virus on Shelter Island, Deputy Supervisor Amber Brach-Williams told the Town Board at Tuesday’s work session that number is at 35 to 36 cases.
What is most alarming is that two-thirds of those cases have happened in the past two months compared with the one-third that occurred over a seven-month period from the time the pandemic started at the beginning March. ....

Town Board focuses on police reforms
The Town Board addressed the state and federal government provisions for reforms of the local Police Department.
“A lot of this doesn’t affect us,” Supervisor Gerry Siller said about a list of requirements issued by Gov. Andrew Cuomo. But a plan for reform must be put in place by April 1 to qualify for state funding, he said.
“I’m always looking for ways for us to improve,” Police Chief Jim Read said.
The governor’s outline calls for:
• Improving deployment strategies
• Addressing bias and proportionate policing of neighborhoods
Local departments are being asked to examine use of force and procedural justice, “hot spot” policing, crime prevention and violence prevention and reduction. ....

Jake Card declared co-champion in Florida tournament - Shelter Island Reporter

Jay (Jake) Card III, called by many the finest golfer to come out of Shelter Island, has notched another significant victory to add to his many triumphs.
The PGA pro has been declared co-champion of the Indian Spring Country Club (Fla.) with fellow pro Jeremy Gandon of France. A playoff was canceled because of darkness.
Jake came into the clubhouse with a six under par 66, the identical score carded by the Frenchman. Each golfer recorded seven birdies and a bogey, and split the first prize money, each pocketing $775 apiece from the $4,875 purse.
Next up is the 16th annual Tour Championship supported by Joey D Golf. The tournament will be held at the Abacoa Golf Club in Jupiter, Fla. Golfers will be gunning for a winning prize of $10,000. ....
