Let me be the 34,591st to say that I don’t understand the full implications that Name, Image and Likeness opportunities will have on college athletics. Most of you don’t either. Now that the NCAA has cleared the way for money to flow – with some restrictions set by individual schools and states – we all will learn as we go.
My first reaction, however, is absolute satisfaction for somebody like Connor Genal, a walk-on quarterback at UNM who was featured in Geoff Grammer’s report for Thursday’s Journal.
And there was much to celebrate.
Albuquerque Academy and St. Pius on Saturday night provided an enthralling finish to this unusual calendar, combining to score nine runs in the final inning. The Chargers scored four in the bottom of the seventh to walk it off, 8-7, in the Class 4A state baseball final.
Athletes dream of moments like the one Devan Johnson of Academy enjoyed, with a three-run double to win the game. He’ll relive that moment internally, and regale people with that story, for many years. What an electrifying exit scene.
And were it not for the Volcano Vista-Hobbs overtime thriller in the girls state basketball tournament in early May and that game’s rather spectacular finish this would have gotten my vote for the best postseason game in any sport this year.
