Yodice on preps: Post-pandemic seasons packed unforgettable moments

.... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... Natalia Chavez, center, is mobbed by her Volcano Vista teammates after hitting a shot from beyond 45 feet at the OT buzzer to beat Hobbs for the 5A girls basketball title. (Jim Thompson/Albuquerque Journal) Saturday, April 10, as much as any day, defined the staggering weirdness of the spring 2021 prep sports semester in New Mexico. On the same day, the state was staging fall sports in the form of state soccer finals, winter sports in the form of basketball, and the start of spring sports. That kind of confluence had never before occurred. Or, maybe it was April 1 that underlined this point with more clarity, with prep football played inside University Stadium, part of a five-games-in-three days “bowl game” experiment by the New Mexico Activities Association in lieu of an actual football postseason.

Yodice: Amazing, and apt, close to spring

And there was much to celebrate. Albuquerque Academy and St. Pius on Saturday night provided an enthralling finish to this unusual calendar, combining to score nine runs in the final inning. The Chargers scored four in the bottom of the seventh to walk it off, 8-7, in the Class 4A state baseball final. Athletes dream of moments like the one Devan Johnson of Academy enjoyed, with a three-run double to win the game. He’ll relive that moment internally, and regale people with that story, for many years. What an electrifying exit scene. And were it not for the Volcano Vista-Hobbs overtime thriller in the girls state basketball tournament in early May and that game’s rather spectacular finish this would have gotten my vote for the best postseason game in any sport this year.
