Public health guidelines to protect against COVID-19 are going to be much easier to implement in schools this academic year compared to the 2020-21 school year, said Heather Armelino, the superintendent of the Enterprise Elementary School District.
For now, students no longer have to stay in the same groups all day, distance themselves, or wear masks outdoors.
Students and staff are only mandated to wear masks indoors when they go back to school in August, according to California Public Health Guidance for K-12 schools.
If families are opposed to their children wearing masks in schools, they have an option to choose independent learning, Armelino said. Families who choose this option will essentially have their kids in distance learning every day in grades K-3 and once a week with daily check-ins for grades 4-8, she said.  ....

With the academic year coming to an end, Lisa Carlton reflected on what it was like to teach her students with the uncertainty the coronavirus pandemic cast over how schools would operate.
There were sleepless nights when she didn t know whether she would teach a class of kindergarteners in person or online.
Manzanita Elementary School started with a hybrid schedule and by last October, transitioned to a full-time in-person schedule with a distance learning option.
“It was all unknown at the beginning. Having students not show up to meetings because they really couldn’t was hard because I didn’t want anyone falling behind on my end,” Carlton said. ....

Enterprise memorial to teens killed in 1968 crash to be restored

More than 50 years after a crash killed six Redding teens, some Enterprise High School alumni want to raise $100,000 to restore a memorial fountain that tells their story.
“I ve talked with many of the surviving family members and alumni who were students then,” Enterprise principal Ryan Johnson said. “It’s still one of the most impactful events in their lives.”
The deaths of the five Enterprise students and their driver in 1968 shocked the North State community and changed the way schools shuttle students to athletic events.
Thirty years later, it also inspired their surviving family and friends to build a fountain at Enterprise High School in their memory and to remind students to drive safely. ....

OAKLAND, Calif. - New state and federal Covid safety guidelines that reduce the recommended minimum distance between students from 6 feet to 3 feet should make it easier for California schools to return students to classrooms full time, but most districts are not likely to make the change until the fall.
Instead, many district officials contacted by EdSource expressed reluctance to make changes to instructional models this school year because most have either reopened or plan to reopen campuses in the next few weeks. ....
