Students and staff are only mandated to wear masks indoors when they go back to school in August, according to California Public Health Guidance for K-12 schools.  If families are opposed to their children wearing masks in schools, they have an option to choose independent learning, Armelino said. Families who choose this option will essentially have their kids in distance learning every day in grades K-3 and once a week with daily check-ins for grades 4-8, she said.
