On the edge of West Berkeley, dozens of tents and vehicles can be seen congregating on Second Street as members of the unhoused community wait to be admitted to homeless shelters at full capacity. Amid various implications of the COVID-19 pandemic, a single mother and her child resided in the basement of another family’s house in North Berkeley, struggling to make ends meet during the decline of the local and national economy. With the enforcement of health protocols, an individual in South Berkeley found himself spending most evenings sleeping on the sidewalk facing the impossibility of following shelter-in-place orders. ....
When Greg Ritzinger was in his early 20s, he found himself without permanent housing and unable to fully access public facilities or amenities, while facing other difficulties as a former youth experiencing homelessness, or YEH. Now, at the age of 29, Ritzinger is a UC Berkeley student and a member of Youth and Allies Against Homelessness, or YAAH, a group committed to ending homelessness. Considered to be an overlooked population, YEH are generally individuals under the age of 26 who are experiencing homelessness. In addition to being a physical health threat, COVID-19 impacts the well-being of YEH by limiting their basic needs of shelter, food and safety. ....
Independent candidate Gabrielle Sharp runs for ASUC Senate Gabrielle Sharp, a UC Berkeley sophomore, is running independently for ASUC Senate on a platform focused on reinvesting in the community, bridging the divide between campus and city residents and serving the queer and transgender people of color community. A passionate community organizer, Sharp hopes to uplift students’ progressive voices if elected. “I believe that running for ASUC senate gives a students a platform,” Sharp said in an email. “I want to use that platform to uplift not only the student communities I belong to as a queer Black woman, but also to uplift the greater community in berkeley.” ....

City of Berkeley must continue work with advocacy groups to aid unhoused communities The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic has uprooted life as we know it. Our community has faced unprecedented challenges, but for our unhoused neighbors, the pandemic has further amplified already-existing issues. People experiencing homelessness in Berkeley continue to be affected by water insecurity and encampment sweeps. Although water insecurity burdened individuals experiencing homelessness prior to the pandemic, many could rely on public libraries and college campuses for drinking and hand-washing water. This is no longer the case. Being deprived of basic sanitation during a pandemic is cruel, especially when unhoused individuals are frequently unable to social distance or receive reliable health care. Inadequate access to sanitation resources has devastated unhoused communities before, notably in San Diego where the city’s neglect led to a deadly two-year hepatitis A outbreak. The cit ....
