UC Berkeley alumnus Nicholas Alexander opens kitchen in People's Park

Nicholas Alexander has “grown up on himself,” learning to cook while navigating the foster care system. As a UC Berkeley student, Alexander would host dinner parties at his residence. Now, he cooks meals for the residents of People’s Park.
In March, Alexander said he opened a physical kitchen in People’s Park and has been serving meals, snacks, coffee and more to the park’s unhoused community since. The structure, built by Alexander himself, was painted during a community event and contains a storage area and main kitchen
“There is an increased need for food security in Berkeley,” said campus senior Aidan Hill, former vice chair of the Berkeley Homeless Commission, in an email. “People’s Park used to have numerous religious and community organizations who would serve food in the Park before quarantine occurrs. Now its more sporadic.” ....

Community members march against UC Berkeley development plans

About 100 community members gathered Saturday at 1921 Walnut St. for a march to People’s Park protesting UC Berkeley’s development plans at both locations.
The march comes as UC Berkeley continues its plans to construct student housing at People’s Park and on what is currently a tenant-occupied and rent-controlled apartment building at 1921 Walnut St.
“We’re strongly objecting to this,” said Paul Wallace, a six-year resident and current tenant of 1921 Walnut St., at the march. “We believe it’s extremely unfair.”
Development is underway as campus faces growing demand for student housing.
Natalie Logusch, who has lived at 1921 Walnut St. for 11 years, said she was informed of UC Berkeley’s plans to convert the property into student housing after its purchase last year. ....

Community members discuss importance of protecting urban green space

For Berkeley community member Joe Liesner, getting out of the concrete-covered city of Berkeley and exploring a state park or beach feels wonderful.
He said stepping into urban green space, even if it is surrounded by buildings, captures part of that feeling without leaving the city.
Berkeley’s Parks, Recreation and Waterfront Department does much to maintain the city’s green space, according to Berkeley City Councilmember Kate Harrison. She added that green space helps mitigate climate change and provides a space for people to recreate.
“Seeing nature, seeing animals and seeing other people relaxing around us it’s so important for the human psyche to relax and not be trapped in the rat race of school and work and society,” Liesner said. ....

'Governed by us': Looking into the history of People's Park

Editor’s note: This article is the first part of a three-part series on People’s Park and campus’s proposed development of it.
Since February, UC Berkeley students have occupied People’s Park in protest of campus plans to build a multi-story student housing and supportive housing complex on the site, marking the latest in a decadeslong struggle to preserve the 2.8-acre parcel of land as a public open space and a piece of Berkeley history.
Park advocates and the UC system have collided over the space for nearly as long as the park itself has been around. After purchasing the space in 1967 with the express purpose of developing the land, the university was met with opposition when about 200 people turned up one Sunday in April of 1969 to lay down soil and plant grass over the muddy lot in the south campus neighborhood. ....
