West Central softball breaks through in win over Triopia

West Central softball breaks through in win over Triopia Dennis Mathes, dmathes@myjournalcourier.com FacebookTwitterEmail 21of21 West Central softball coach Kandice Kunkel took advantage of Tuesday’s rainy weather by dusting off her racket and hitting some tennis balls. Not over a net. At her players, during practice in the gym. Trying to field tennis balls forced West Central’s players to get in front of the ball and use two hands two very necessary skills when playing on an artificial surface, as the Cougars did on Wednesday against Triopia. West Central made only two errors, and banged out 12 hits, in an 11-3 win over the Trojans at Future Champions Sports Complex in Jacksonville.

Routt softball coach talks about win over West Central

Routt softball coach talks about win over West Central Dennis Mathes, dmathes@myjournalcourier.com FacebookTwitterEmail 11of11 The Routt softball team banged out 11 hits, and got hits when it needed them most, in a 13-8 win over West Central in the Rockets’ season opener Monday in Jacksonville. “Kind of what I expected,” Routt coach Jamie Martin said. “I knew we were going to give up some runs. I mean, pitching our pitchers did a nice job throwing strikes, but we’re not going to shut anybody out on that end of it. We’ve got to let our defense work, and they did a nice job most of the innings and luckily, our bats came to hit, and we had a nice finish to the game.”

Sydney Elliott helps lead West Central girls past Carrollton in key WIVC matchup

Sydney Elliott helps lead West Central girls past Carrollton in key WIVC matchup Dennis Mathes, dmathes@myjournalcourier.com FacebookTwitterEmail The West Central girls’ basketball team got a big game from Sydney Elliott and showed some mental toughness down the stretch in a 38-36 win at WIVC rival Carrollton Monday night. “We made some plays when we had to,” West Central coach Brian Bettis said. “Could have made it a little easier on ourselves missed a couple free throws. We didn’t miss very many … but overall, I think part of it was, we played a lot slower pace. And a lot of that had to do with the way Carrollton was playing, too. They play a slower game also, which meant that we had more quality looks on offense.”
