Expecting a busy summer season and facing a nationwide hiring shortage, some municipalities have had to increase hiring incentives to get enough lifeguards monitoring Aquidneck Island beaches. “We re in the same boat as many other employers in that we are still struggling to fill some vacancies heading into the season,” said Tom Shevlin, the communications officer for the city of Newport. ....
Newport Daily News The increase in mental health concerns that arose during the COVID-19 pandemic has left mental health centers full with patients, but also with newfound support to expand and grow their services. “(The pandemic) has brought to the surface how much need there is around mental health support and services in general, with the increased isolation and the increased trauma around the number of people impacted by COVID,” said Cindy Gordon, Newport Mental Health’s chief medical officer. “It s was a fear of the unknown, and so for a lot of people, that increased anxiety, for some depression.” ....

That way they can be found.” Aquidneck Shells is a Facebook group Arbige launched with her son Jaxon in August last year as a fun community activity for families looking for something to do during the COVID pandemic. The objective is to find shells, paint them and hide them across Aquidneck Island for other members of the group to find and post. The group has grown rapidly, now boasting more than 3,600 members. ....
