Newport Daily News The increase in mental health concerns that arose during the COVID-19 pandemic has left mental health centers full with patients, but also with newfound support to expand and grow their services. “(The pandemic) has brought to the surface how much need there is around mental health support and services in general, with the increased isolation and the increased trauma around the number of people impacted by COVID,” said Cindy Gordon, Newport Mental Health’s chief medical officer. “It s was a fear of the unknown, and so for a lot of people, that increased anxiety, for some depression.” ....

It may seem obvious to anyone who lives in Newport County as to why a person would contemplate jumping off a bridge. Bridges are everywhere. They are convenient and link our islands together. The paradox is that people around here don’t enjoy crossing bridges. They prefer to stay put, and yet they may consider jumping off the bridge, if distraught enough. ....

(Antonia Ayres-Brown/The Public s Radio) Jamie Lehane’s son was 18 years old and had just gone off to college, when Lehane’s phone rang unexpectedly. “I got the call from the campus police that, ‘Your son is being rushed to a local community hospital, and that he’s had a serious mental breakdown,’” Lehane said. It turned out to be a psychotic episode. Lehane said his son was later diagnosed with bipolar disorder. For Lehane, who is president of the organization Newport Mental Health, this moment more than a decade ago was a turning point. He had dedicated his career to working in mental health, but he saw firsthand how easy it can be, as a parent, to misinterpret early signs and symptoms of mental illness in young adults. ....
The Rhode Island Foundation awarded a record $87 million in grants to more than 2,200 nonprofit organizations in 2020, the foundation announced Wednesday. In a year of great need because of the coronavirus pandemic, the foundation received $68 million in donations, the third-highest total in its 105-year history. Gifts ranged in size from $1 to several million dollars. We are grateful for the passionate and committed donors who have partnered with us for 105 years to take on the challenges and issues of the day, said Neil D. Steinberg, the foundation’s president and CEO. “Working with nonprofit organizations to support their critical services in the community, inspiring donors, and providing leadership around crucial issues all played a role as we worked to meet the needs of all Rhode Islanders during a year unlike any we’ve experienced before, Steinberg said. ....
