Erie thrift store, Thrifter Heaven, continues legacy of Erie's Charles and Mary Beth Kennedy

Mother Mary Beth Kennedy wanted to raise money to help missions around the world.
Six months after Kennedy died in January 2020, her granddaughter opened a thrift store in the midst of a pandemic to help people. A year later, Thrifter Heaven has raised money for a school in the Dominican Republic, an orphanage in the Democratic Republic of Congo and a senior citizen facility in Cuba while also trying to offer low-price items for shoppers in the Erie area. And the store has just moved to a bigger location, at 4455 West Ridge Road.
We exist to help sell merchandise that people locally need and want at a price they can afford. Our hope is to help people locally but also to get people to rally behind this vision and help the many countries around the world that are in need of basic necessities such as food, said Angela Collins, a granddaughter of the late missionaries Mary Beth and Charles Kennedy. ....

Staff day reinvigorates MVCS - The Martha's Vineyard Times

The Martha s Vineyard Times
To the Editor:
On Friday, April 30, Martha’s Vineyard Community Services (MVCS) held its first annual “Community of Caring” staff day. Several community partners joined with us to fill the day with learning, connection, and fun. After a year focused on protecting the health and safety of our staff, clients, and community during the coronavirus pandemic, the staff day had just the right touch of team building and camaraderie.
We extend our gratitude to our friends across the Island who helped MVCS kick the day off with highly anticipated morning sessions. Nearly 100 MVCS staff, divided into small groups of six to 10, congregated across Island locales to participate in a variety of activities. Among the favorite experiences were: equine-assisted learning at Misty Meadows; guided disc golf with Jake Gifford, owner of Lazy Frog; ropes course challenge with Sterling Bishop of Dukes County Sheriff’s Office; guided tour at Po ....

SCAG Drafts Equity Plan for 'Communities of Concern'

SCAG Drafts Equity Plan for ‘Communities of Concern’
The Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG) has drafted a plan that would incentivize private business owners to reflect more diversity in their companies to get city contracts.
SCAG, the nation’s largest metropolitan planning organization, has introduced a draft of a Racial Equity Early Action Plan to be voted on next month. It would reward contractors who conform to diverse hiring practices. Opponents have called the plan unnecessary and discriminatory.
Anaheim City Councilman Trevor O’Neil, a SCAG board member, told The Epoch Times that he opposes the idea of local governments meddling in the hiring practices of private companies because federal law already prohibits discrimination in the workplace. ....
