ALTON More than 40 members of the Riverbend Pickleball Group came to Gordon Moore Park in Alton Saturday to celebrate Opening Day and the Inaugural Gherkin Tournament, a single-elimination tournament won by Mark and Paula Mathews of Godfrey. Pickleball is America’s fastest growing sport, with courts being added to RV parks and senior communities. The paddle sport combines facets of badminton, tennis and ping pong using a hollow ball similar in appearance to a Wiffle ball. ....
Restaurant considering Alton site FacebookTwitterEmail ALTON Aldermen on Wednesday night took the first steps in possibly adding a new restaurant in Alton. At Wednesday’s city council meeting, aldermen approved preliminary and final subdivision plats for Alton Circle Subdivision proposed by Sheppard, Morgan & Schwaab, Inc. The area is the lot adjacent to the AT&T Store on 1725 Homer Adams Parkway in Alton. The plan is to expand the area slightly to make room for a drive-through restaurant. According to Mayor Brant Walker, the restaurant is from a nationally known brand not currently in Alton. Construction is set to begin “very soon,” Walker said. ....

Cougars make Alton their official home Dylan Suttles, [email protected] FacebookTwitterEmail 3of3 ALTON The Central Illinois Cougars were welcomed Friday to the 1st MidAmercia Soccer Complex at Gordon Moore Park by Alton Mayor Brant Walker and Alton Parks and Recreation Director Michael Haynes. “I couldn’t be happier,” Walker said. “Having the Cougars play in Alton is another affordable amenity that is family friendly and will also bring more people to our region.” Kinney Myles, owner and head coach for the Carlinville-based team, started it in 1999, playing home games in Carlinville and Springfield areas. The Cougars are part of the Hidden Gems Football League and play in the Ruby Division, winning three league championships and played in three other championship games. ....

Add football to the list of semi-pro sports to call Alton home. The announcement came in a Friday afternoon media availability at Gordon Moore Park. The Central Illinois Cougars will play on one of the new turf fields at the 1 st Mid-America soccer complex. The team had been playing in towns like Carlinville and Springfield, according to Alton Park and Recreation Director Mike Haynes. He tells The Big Z this is full contact football with many local ties. Click here for Haynes comments There will be additional bleachers added to the turf field at Gordon Moore Park, which has seen many upgrades to the sidewalks, concessions, and other amenities recently. The Cougars’ season starts in April and will run through early June. ....
