ALTON More than 40 members of the Riverbend Pickleball Group came to Gordon Moore Park in Alton Saturday to celebrate Opening Day and the Inaugural Gherkin Tournament, a single-elimination tournament won by Mark and Paula Mathews of Godfrey.
Pickleball is America’s fastest growing sport, with courts being added to RV parks and senior communities. The paddle sport combines facets of badminton, tennis and ping pong using a hollow ball similar in appearance to a Wiffle ball. ....

Clergy Urge Older Residents to Get Vaccine

If you are 65 years old or older, you can take part in a series of vaccination clinics coming up at the former Riverbend Billiards building in Alton. Now called LaMay’s Catering, the building on Broadway will open its doors for the Madison County Health Department to deliver vaccines on four consecutive Mondays in March.
This is being held in part with the support of local clergy. Jason Harrison of Deliverance Temple tells The Big Z there will be free transportation available to many courtesy of Madison County Transit.

ALTON More COVID-19 vaccination options were announced Monday for Madison County.
Starting Tuesday, Feb. 23, the Gateway Convention Center in Collinsville will be used by the Madison County Health Department to administer as many as 1,350 vaccinations a day. Six organizations also will partner with the health department to offer weekly COVID-19 vaccination clinics in Alton during March.
“We are happy to partner with the Illinois National Guard and community partners throughout the county to increase our capacity to administer vaccines in Madison County, especially to our vulnerable populations,” said Toni Corona, Director of Public Health, Madison County Health Department. ....
