MP calls for A1 to be renamed 'Queen's Highway' for platinum jubilee

Conservative MP Sir Edward Leigh wants the A1 renamed the Queen’s Highway.
However, the idea has not met with universal favour throughout East Lothian, where the route stretches from Dunglass in the east to outside Musselburgh and the Edinburgh boundary.
Sir Edward told the House of Commons the “beautiful Great North Road” should be renamed after the Queen to celebrate her 70 years on the throne next year.
Speaking during transport questions, he said: “The A1, the Great North Road, is a beautiful road linking Scotland and England – and I think, to honour the upcoming jubilee, we should rename it the Queen’s Highway; why not? ....

Pigeon club's home 'completely gutted' by fire police believe to be deliberate

FIRE has ravaged a pigeon club’s home in Elphinstone, leaving it “completely gutted”.
The blaze – which police have confirmed is being treated as “wilful” – on Monday morning has left the Traprain Homing Society homeless just days before the new season gets underway – though, thankfully, there were no pigeons in the building at the time.
Club president Tom McLeod, who lives in the village, received a call on Monday morning highlighting the damage and was on scene as firefighters dampened the blaze.
He told the Courier: “I’m devastated, to be honest.
“You just start running through your mind what caused it.” ....

Hope to bring life-saving defibrillator machine to Elphinstone

Plans have been lodged for a a defibrillator to be placed outside Roots and Fruits in Elphinstone.
The machine uses an electric pulse or shock to the heart to restore a normal heartbeat.
They can also be used to prevent or correct an arrhythmia and restore the heart’s beating if it stops.
Elphinstone Community Association is asking East Lothian Council planning department’s permission for a defibrillator cabinet, with the machine then stored inside and available to anyone at any time.
Margo Macdonald, vice-chairwoman of Elphinstone Community Association, was hopeful that the machine could be in place soon.
She said: “It will be the only defibrillator in the village and it will be put up outside the shop, which is the main focal point for the village. ....
