The world has missed its target for protecting oceans to save species

Governments have hit a global target for creating protected areas on land, but failed to meet a similar goal on oceans, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has found.

UNEP found that while only 16.64 per cent of land had been officially reported as protected by 2020, it is clear from other data that the 17 per cent goal was exceeded. However, just 7.74 per cent of oceans were protected, and even several large pending marine protected areas won’t close the gap.
Despite that shortfall, the numbers should be welcomed, says Neville Ash at UNEP. “It’s good news. There has been tremendous progress both on land and at sea in the last decade.” ....

A rare fish species believed to have gone extinct with dinosaurs millions of years ago has recently been rediscovered alive in the Indian Ocean.
According to a report from Mongabay, a US-based non-profit conservation and environmental science news platform, a group of South African shark hunters recently found the rare coelacanth species (
Latimeria chalumnae) in the West Indian Ocean off the coast of Madagascar.
The coelacanth species is also known as the four-legged fossil fish and dates back to 420 million years ago. The species lives in undersea canyons at depths between 100 and 500 meters and weighs up to 90 kilograms, per Mongabay s report. ....

Ghost fish: after 420 million years in the deeps, modern gillnets from shark fin trade drag coelacanths into the light

Ghost fish: after 420 million years in the deeps, modern gillnets from shark fin trade drag coelacanths into the light
by Tony Carnie on 12 May 2021
Undersea canyons off Madagascar may turn out to be the Indian Ocean epicentre for coelacanths, the remarkable “fossil fish” which re-surfaced from apparent extinction in 1938.
Coelacanths have turned up with unexpected frequency in gill-nets set in deep waters to catch sharks for new, commercial markets.
A worrying trend in recent coelacanth catches in Madagascar is the high proportion of pregnant females, which are thought to produce just 140 live babies during their entire lifecycle.
Marine scientists are calling for reinforcement of conservation measures to protect this population from the pressure of incidental gill-net captures driven by the shark fin trade. ....

Cruising: Honoring Remarkable Ocean Voyages and Seamanship

The Cruising Club of America, an organization of about 1,300 offshore sailors, has been honoring remarkable ocean voyages and seamanship with an array of prestigious awards for nearly 100 years. The club’s highest honor, the Blue Water Medal, has recognized renowned and little-known sailors alike, from Sir Robin Knox-Johnston to the British mariners who rescued untold thousands of Allied troops from the beaches of Dunkirk in 1940.
The CCA also gives an award for acts of exceptional seamanship and rescue, and most recently (in 2016) established what it calls its Young Voyager Award, recognizing “a young sailor who has made one or more exceptional voyages.” The inaugural awardee was polar voyager Erik de Jong. Subsequent awards have gone to solo nonstop circumnavigator Jessica Watson, my husband, Seth, and me, and ....
