RACINE — Saturday was a day of two protests in Racine over whether students and staff members of the Racine Unified School District should return to in-person learning.
The first was the Safety, Equity and Trust Car Caravan, led by Racine Educators United, for parents and educators who don’t believe it’s safe yet to return to in-person learning without precautions like vaccinations, contact tracing, regular testing, building updates and more in place.
The second was the Rally For Choice for those who want Unified to put together a plan that will give them a choice between in-person or virtual learning. ....

Kenosha educator says husband died from virus after she contracted COVID-19 at school


A Kenosha educator is mourning the loss of her husband who died Jan. 3 from COVID-19 which she said she was exposed to at school and inadvertently passed along to him.
Jeanne Holmes Hoffman said she had been on unpaid medical leave from Sept. 28 to Nov. 30 caring for her husband Jim, an electrical engineer and service manager who was on disability and had health issues that rendered him high-risk for contracting the virus. Hoffman, a special education support professional at Brass Community School, returned to work Dec. 1 and tested positive for COVID-19 just nine days after.
Three weeks later, her husband, a veteran who served eight years in the U.S. Air Force, died. ....

KENOSHA, Wis. (WTMJ) - As schools in Kenosha, Wisconsin, prepare to return to in-person learning, one teacher who believes she contracted COVID-19 in the classroom then passed it on to her husband, who died, is fighting that decision.
Jeanne Hoffman believes she contracted COVID-19 while teaching in-person in the Kenosha Unified School District. Her close friend, Tanya Kitts-Lewinski, says Hoffman used all of her medical leave before returning to the school because her husband was high risk. ....

Tensions that have mounted over Kenosha Unified’s decision to go all-virtual through the first week of the New Year came to a head Tuesday night as School Board member Todd Battle and Board President Tom Duncan clashed over the amount of time allotted to speaking on the school return plan amid the pandemic.
During the last meeting of the year before the holidays, Duncan spoke at length about e-mails for and against the School Board’s Nov. 17 decision to switch to an all-virtual format with a plan to return on Jan. 11. The district went all-virtual on Nov. 30.
Duncan’s remarks came during discussion about the district’s Return 2020 Plan, a hybrid model previously in place with families having been able to choose in-person or virtual learning to start the school year. Along with the plan, the district spelled out threshold guidelines for specific instances by which schools or the entire district would revert to an all-virtual model, including a surge in c ....
