Journal Sentinel Stops Printing Mugshots, Citing Racial Justice Concerns | News/Talk 1130 WISN

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel will no longer print mugshots of criminal suspects, multiple sources tell The Dan O Donnell Show. During a lengthy newsroom meeting Wednesday, the newspaper s senior editors announced a change in policy that was prompted by social justice concerns.
Apparently they think that running mug shots perpetuates racial biases, said one source. They don t want readers drawing racist inferences if they run mug shots of minority suspects.
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel has not yet responded to a request for comment and has not yet publicly announced its change in policy. In 2018,
Journal Sentinel owner Gannett removed all mugshot galleries from its websites and last June announced that it would remove such galleries from all sites owned by the former GateHouse Media. GateHouse Media acquired Gannett and took its name in early 2020. ....

Gannett needs to invest if it wants to meet its digital subscription goal

The Gannett newspaper chain, like nearly all publishers, is staking its future on reader revenue. Which raises a question: What is the company prepared to do to make that happen?
In its most recent quarterly report, the country’s largest newspaper chain said that its total number of digital subscribers is now 1.2 million an increase of 37% over the previous year, but not especially impressive for a company that owns about 250 daily papers, including USA Today, and hundreds more weeklies. Gannett CEO Mike Reed said he’s aiming for 10 million in five years.
At least the subscription total is heading in the right direction. Overall, the company lost $142 million, largely due to pandemic-related declines in print and digital advertising. ....

Staffers at The Record, 2 other NJ news sites vote to unionize
Staffers at three New Jersey newspapers owned by Gannett voted Friday to jointly unionize.
The Record Guild – part of the NewsGuild of New York – represents editorial staff at The Record, the Daily Record and New Jersey Herald. They organized over demands for better pay and health benefits, diverse hiring practices as well as a transparent and standardized system for promotion and pay raises.
Friday’s vote was 59-4, in an election run by the National Labor Relations Board.
“It is just a great day for our Guild, and I am proud of our members,” said Katie Sobko, a reporter for The Record the past 10 years who is one of the union organizers. “But our work doesn’t stop here.” ....

New eras in Newport news 
In 1918, the newspaper was sold to Edward Sherman, who continued publishing the newspaper until his death on June 15, 1934. By May 4, 1921 the paper s 75th anniversary  the paper had grown to 12 pages and its circulation had increased from 3,500 in 1896, to a daily average of 6,500 and published frequent special editions. 
Following his death, the paper was published by his two sons, Albert K. Sherman, and Edward A. Ned Sherman Jr., under the terms of his will, by the Edward A. Sherman Publishing Company and was eventually headed up by Albert K. Buck Sherman, who always knew he d end up as the paper s publisher.  ....
