Following the release of California’s 2021-22 proposed budget in January, California Gov. Gavin Newsom submitted his May Revision, detailing changes to the proposed budget primarily in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The May Revision outlines investments in several sectors including education, COVID-19 relief, public health, homelessness and climate resilience. California has denied any conflict of interest in the state’s recent decision to bar three San Diego-area school districts from reopening classrooms for in-person teaching, despite accusations from angry parents.
The state’s Safe Schools for All Team denied applications from three San Diego middle and high schools that applied for exemption status after county officials approved them for safe in-person teaching, even though the county remains in the restrictive purple tier, reported the San Diego Tribune.
Secondary schools are permitted to reopen once they reach the less-restrictive red tier. ....

Newsom Appointee Undermines His School Reopening Push

CARLSBAD, Calif. Thousands of California parents who want to see their students return to school have experienced an emotional roller coaster this week, with many saying it’s hard to put any trust in the government’s conflicting narrative and decisions on school reopenings.
In early March, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced a $6.6 billion incentive plan, declaring that it was time for kids to safely return to the classroom. But just six days into the push, one of his health department appointees denied the applications of three San Diego-area school districts to expand in-person learning, overturning a decision by the top county public health official who had approved the districts’ opening plans two weeks ago.  ....

California inspectors find 'deficiencies' at new coronavirus testing lab

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s coronavirus czar, says it’s possible masks could be needed for another year.
The California Department of Public Health, which regulates laboratories, said the findings came from its initial routine inspection in early December. The company said it appeared some of the information it provided since then had not been included in that inspection report.
But the department said earlier this month that it also is investigating whistleblower allegations of incompetence and mismanagement, including reports of workers sleeping on the job.

Records obtained by CBS13 TV in Sacramento alleged problems including swapped samples, inconclusive tests caused by contamination, and inaccurate results sent to patients. The health department acknowledged then that at least “38 samples were reported incorrectly” because of mix-ups in samples, but said patients were promptly notified. ....
