May 12, 2021 - 11:01 AM
The province is providing $100,000 to develop a proposal for a community-based, permanent housing project for up to 100 women and children.
The YWCA, Alice House, Elizabeth Fry Society of Mainland Nova Scotia and the Marguerite Centre will work together on a plan for the Home for Good Centre. The vision is to create a community hub with a mix of housing options for women and families. The plan would include supported housing, affordable housing, multipurpose spaces for community use and office space for service providers.
“We are focused on creating permanent supportive housing for people experiencing homelessness or living in precarious housing,” said Kelly Regan, Minister of Community Services. “Having safe, affordable housing that supports mothers and their children will have a lasting impact on their lives and their ability to succeed.” ....

“Nova Scotians have been amazing at coming together as a community and helping each other through the third wave of the pandemic,” said Premier Iain Rankin. “Unfortunately, not everyone has people close by to lean on during tough times. Stanley Hemming, 61, waits every week to find out if his hotel stay will be renewed.(Steve Lawrence/CBC)
Evicted from his Halifax apartment on March 31 for rental arrears, Stanley Hemming packed a few changes of clothes, some essential paperwork and little else.
He went to the hospital, in part because as a diabetic, he knew his blood sugar was dangerously high. But in equal part, he hoped to be admitted just so he would have a place to sleep that night.
Hemming, 61, wasn t admitted to hospital that day, but to his relief, he was offered a bed elsewhere. Staff with the Nova Scotia Department of Community Services placed Hemming in a hotel room, where he s been living ever since.  ....
