Province announces money for shelter beds, housing initiative

The Nova Scotia government announced this week two initiatives aimed at addressing the province s growing homelessness problem.
The moves are being welcomed by community workers, even as some continue to push for permanent solutions like more affordable housing.
On Tuesday, the province said it would spend $350,000 to add 15 new beds to the Mi kmaw Native Friendship Centre s North Park shelter in Halifax. That will increase the total number of beds designated for Indigenous men and women at the shelter to 40.

Funding for More Shelter Beds

The province is investing $350,000 to add 15 temporary shelter beds in partnership with the Mi kmaw Native Friendship Centre in Halifax. The beds will be at the centre’s North Park shelter location until the end of 2021.
With this new funding, the shelter system will have its highest-ever capacity. During the initial waves of the pandemic, the provincial government funded 40 additional shelter beds.
“As the pandemic continues, we are committed to supporting Nova Scotians who need emergency housing,” said Kelly Regan, Minister of Community Services. “And while COVID-19 has increased demand for shelter beds, we know people experiencing homelessness need permanent, supportive housing. We’re working diligently to help create more of those options.” ....

Community centres jump into action to help families transition to at-home learning

Even though community organizations say they re better prepared to help Nova Scotians through a second school shutdown, they also worry some students will struggle and fall behind.
The province closed all schools after confirming another record number of COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, and more than 120,000 students will begin learning from home Thursday. 
Remote learning is a daunting task for most parents, especially those who don t have access to reliable internet. ....
