Scout Land and the woodland owned by 1st Wigton Baden-Powell Scouts reverberated to the excited sound of Beaver, Cubs and Scouts enjoying meetings once again.
Cubs and Scouts enjoying meetings once again. Beavers have been exploring, had a scavenger hunt and learned about the many animals and birds on Scout Land.
Meanwhile, Cubs have been fire lighting and cooking, with a week of den building for the newest Cubs. Scouts had a fire competition to see who could light their fire the fastest and get it burning high enough to burn through a piece of rope, they have also each gutted a fish and then cooked it in newspaper over a fire, whilst older Scouts grilled their fish directly over the fire. ....

Stunning new community space created with £80k Distington club renovation

A COMMUNITY club has been given a new look – and the team behind it couldn’t be more excited to unveil their fabulous new space.
Distington Community Amateur Sports Club secured the funding to renovate its base in February 2020, but Covid halted plans before the work could be completed.
But with the £80,000 refurbishment now complete, a brand new space for the community to call home has been created.
“Absolutely everything has been done, from the windows and ceiling to the floor – everything,” club stewardess, Paula Speight, said.
“We had so many people volunteering to help, and the whole community has just been amazing. We couldn’t have done it without them!” ....

Grants available for good causes in Furness
Charitable groups and community projects in and around the Furness area are being encouraged to apply for funding.
Cumbria Community Foundation manages more than a hundred grant-making funds and awards £2 million a year on average to community organisations. Funding for projects in the Furness area are considered four times a year through the Furness Grants Committee.

Youngsters put MPs on the spot in Bright Stars challenge

Almost 50 primary schools taking part in the 2021 Bright Stars challenge programme quizzed Cumbria’s MPs who shared their experience and tips about how to lead campaigns to change something the children care about.
Copeland MP Trudy Harrison and Workington MP Mark Jenkinson joined Cumbria’s four other MPs to take part in individual live online question and answer sessions with schools in their constituencies.
The sessions produced a huge variety of questions and answers about how they support their communities and lead change.
Trudy Harrison answered questions about encouraging more recycling and deterring fly tipping, about her work in 10 Downing Street as the Prime Minister’s Parliamentary Private Secretary, and advised children on the importance of explaining why something needs to change. ....
